How Qlumina verifies a quant strategy before allocators see it
Which records count as evidence, what the three gates examine, what a live pilot adds and what verification does not mean.

- Quantitative, operational and live pilot

Qlumina admits a program to the Apex Marketplace only after a quantitative review, an operational review and a live pilot allocation. The review reads the raw evidence, broker statements, timestamped trades and backtests, instead of relying on a manager's summary.
This note sets out what is checked, which records count as evidence, what a live pilot adds, and what verification does not mean. It is written for professional investors and for managers who want to know what to prepare. It is educational and is not an offer or solicitation.
What is checked, and in what order
Every program passes three gates. None is skipped.
| Gate | Question | What is examined |
|---|---|---|
| 01 | Is the edge real? | The record is taken apart: the data, the backtests and the capacity, point by point |
| 02 | Can it be run safely? | Execution, risk systems and custody, checked the way an allocator would |
| 03 | Does it hold up live? | A live pilot allocation, observed before anything scales |
What an allocator browses on the Apex Marketplace has already been through all three, and the diligence record stays attached to the program. Program statistics unlock after investor verification.
Which records count as evidence
Not every number is evidence. A figure counts when it traces to a source the manager does not control.
| Record | What it shows | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Audited accounts | A qualified auditor reviewed the fund's results over a period | Behavior in a different account or period |
| Independent administrator NAV letters | Official net asset value calculated by a third party, with assets under management confirmed | How the strategy would behave at another size |
| Direct broker statements | Trade confirmations and equity runs sourced from the clearing broker | Capacity, or regimes not yet seen |
| Timestamped trade data | Every execution, so slippage, latency and fill quality can be analyzed | Whether the source of edge persists |
| Backtests | What a model would have done on historical data under stated assumptions | Real fills; they are simulations and are exposed to overfitting and look-ahead bias |
| Live pilot capital | Real capital deployed and observed before anything scales | Performance across every regime; a pilot window is finite |
For external programs Qlumina generally prefers managers operating in established structures, such as a hedge fund vehicle, an actively managed certificate or an exchange traded product, with a multi-year record that a reputable and qualified auditor can validate. Audits are strongly preferred but are not mandatory for smaller funds under every regulatory regime. In that case Qlumina accepts official NAV letters from an independent administrator that also confirm the manager's assets under management.
An administrator is an independent third party that calculates NAV, processes subscriptions and redemptions and keeps the financial records. Because it often has weekly or monthly visibility into a fund's brokerage and bank accounts, it adds an ongoing layer of verification alongside the annual review of an audit.
How the raw evidence is audited
Some of the strongest work sits inside larger firms and has no standalone, third-party audited record. For these teams, Qlumina audits the raw evidence itself: broker statements, timestamped trades and backtests. Manager evaluation includes algorithmic verification of timestamped fills, with checks for overfitting, hidden regime bias and tail risk. Portfolio allocations and risk parameters require human fiduciary sign-off.
The questions behind those checks are the ones an allocator would ask. How many variants were tried before this one was chosen? Where did the data come from, and what was never looked at? What size can the strategy reach before its own trading erodes the return? For the methods themselves, see combinatorial purged cross-validation and backtest overfitting, placebo tests and the deflated Sharpe ratio.
What a live pilot adds
A pilot puts real capital into a real account and compares live fills with what the simulation assumed. It confirms execution before anything scales. It cannot prove the strategy across every regime, because the window is finite. For that reason Qlumina treats the pilot as one gate among three, not as proof.
What verification does not mean
- It is not a guarantee of returns, and it does not predict future results. Investing involves substantial risk of loss.
- It is not an endorsement of any manager's strategy for any particular investor. Suitability depends on the mandate and the investor.
- It does not remove counterparty risk. The regulator, the broker or custodian and the legal entity should be identified for every program.
- A separately managed account is a delivery format, not a strategy. See the investor guide for how structures, fees and risk are explained.
Six questions to put to any diligence platform
- 01Where does the performance data come from, and can you ask that source directly?
- 02Is the diligence record attached to the program, or does each manager send a different deck?
- 03What is examined before a program is shown to investors, and by whom?
- 04Does capital sit in an account in your own name at your own broker, and what authority does the manager hold?
- 05Are fees earned only on net new profits above a high-water mark, and can you check that against statements you can verify yourself?
- 06What happens when the pilot and the backtest disagree?
For the longer treatment, see how to verify a quant track record and the note on what a verified quant track record means.
For managers
Managers can see what is examined on the portfolio managers page and in the due diligence FAQ. Prepare the record, the statements, the timestamped trade data and the backtest with its construction notes. A manager without a standalone record can still apply; the raw evidence is what gets audited.
For allocators

Frequently asked questions
What is a quant fund diligence platform?
A quant fund diligence platform collects evidence from its source, keeps it attached to each program and asks the same structured questions of every manager, so programs can be compared on the same basis instead of through different decks.
How does Qlumina verify quant strategy performance?
Through three gates: a quantitative review, an operational review and a live pilot allocation. The quantitative review includes audits of broker statements, timestamped trades and backtests, with checks for overfitting, hidden regime bias and tail risk.
Do you require audited track records?
Audits are strongly preferred but are not mandatory for smaller funds. Official NAV letters from an independent administrator that also confirm assets under management are accepted as an alternative.
Is a backtest a track record?
No. A backtest shows what a model would have done under stated assumptions. A track record starts where the simulation ends, with real capital in a real account.
Does verification mean a program will perform well?
No. Verification examines the evidence behind a record and how a strategy is run. It does not predict returns, and all investments involve risk of loss.
Risk and eligibility
Investing involves substantial risk of loss. The value of investments and the income derived from them can fall as well as rise, and investors may not recover the amount originally invested. Past performance is no guarantee of future returns. Qlumina is a BVI FSC approved investment manager. This page is for professional investors only and is not an offer or solicitation of any kind.
